GOVERNMENT CONTRACTING MAY BECOME HIGHER PROFILE UNDER NEW ADMINISTRATION

“…selling the Pentagon will not be equivalent to selling the President.” is a reality many government contractors will have to adjust to, according to a recent article in Defense News.  While presidents have historically remained out of day-to-day procurements, this is may not be the case under the Trump administration.  Defense News speculates that the next president will involve himself in major acquisitions just as he does now in the management of his business endeavors.  Large deals will likely be viewed through a non-partisan, business-like lens, with cost being a primary consideration.  Contractors should anticipate that procurements may take place with a degree of visibility not previously seen.  Similarly, mistakes may become higher in profile and feature a trip to the Presidential woodshed.  Contractors may want to consider bringing their government affairs teams into the procurement process to ensure that any political angles are analyzed up front. Only time and experience will tell how business will be transacted over the next four years.  The best advice for now is to be as prepared as possible for a wide array of outcomes.
