DOD MAY BYPASS SCHEDULES FOR DIRECT E-COMMERCE
The emergence of e-commerce in federal procurement is like the old joke, “I was wondering what it was that was headed toward me, then it hit me.” Many contractors may not see what appears to be a small object on the horizon, but automated buying and selling is coming to your market – and fast. This is a “head’s up” so that it doesn’t hit your federal business square in the forehead. As we’ve reported before, Amazon already has deals with some federal agencies. DOD and their Congressional overseers are seriously, seriously considering adding a provision to the next authorization bill that would allow DOD agencies to buy direct via e-commerce, and by-pass the GSA Schedules program. Issues such as secure supply chain, competition, Ability One, and small business use have yet to be completely addressed, but don’t think for a second that those discussions aren’t already underway. If you sell products to the federal government, you not only must know what those discussions are, but participate in as many as you can. Make sure that GSA, Defense Procurement, and the House Armed Services Committee all hear from you. Not sure how to do it? We’re happy here to give a shout out to our old stomping grounds. Call the Coalition for Government Procurement. They’re part of the discussions and can help ensure you get your voice heard. Don’t let federal e-commerce knock you out cold. Be prepared.
