AGENCIES PUBLISH PLANS FOR AI COMPLIANCE & GOVERNANCE
The Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are among the agencies that have published their plans on how they will comply with AI guidance issued earlier this year by the Office of Management and Budget. OMB directed agencies to post their initial compliance plan publicly on their website or publish a determination that the agency doesn’t use or anticipate using any AI covered by the memo. The DoD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) is that department’s AI governance body. It is comprised of a wide range of DOD activities, including acquisition policy as well as the Principal Deputy CIO, J(3) and J(6) commands and other offices. In DHS that agency’s AI Governance Board will oversee all AI implementation actions. The board has representation across the board in DHS and is chaired by the Deputy Secretary, with the DHS Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, as the Vice-Chair. In HHS, the Office of the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (OCAIO) is the central contact for coordinating that agency’s AI activities. The OCAIO is also actively engaged in standing up a new HHS AI Community of Practice (CoP) to facilitate AI-related knowledge sharing and communication across HHS on a wide range of topics. Government contractors may want to work closely with each of these groups, as well as similar bodies in other agencies, to better understand how each agency plans to integrate AI into various operations. In addition, it is likely that industry can offer insight and information on current AI trends that could assist government agencies in meeting this mission.
