WILL FEDERAL MARKET BECOME MORE CENTRAL UNDER MANAGEMENT INITIATIVES?
The Trump Administration appears to be serious about federal management. Whether it’s managing personnel levels, agency infrastructure, or IT acquisition and use, the Administration has an initiative led by senior advisors to look at the issue. This certainly isn’t the first attempt at government centralization, but the business-centered approached used by this Administration, coupled with focused determination, may bring changes, whether large or small. On common feature of these initiatives is control. How can the government better control the use of all of its assets? A key part of this will be how the government acquires the services and products it needs to meet its missions. Already out is an OMB memo directing agencies to make more use of Government-Wide Acquisition Contracts, including GSA Schedules. A revitalized version of Category Management is also quite possible. The potential for more centralized decision making and standardization should be clear. Contractors need to be aware of these initiatives and how they could impact the market. More than awareness, however, contractors need to be part of the discussion. The early stages of each initiative make it possible to have a voice and help you stay in front of what might happen to your way of doing business, but only if you pay attention and get involved. Don’t be a passive participant in your market.
