GOVERNMENT OPEN TILL DECEMBER 11, NOW WHAT?
Government agencies continue to operate mostly at FY’15 dollar levels under the Continuing Resolution passed by Congress last week. That means any agency scheduled for an increase in the President’s budget hasn’t yet gotten one and that no new starts are allowed unless Congress specifically said so. The latter is very unlikely to impact commercial item contractors. For now, contractors should focus on getting as much renewal, maintenance, and similar business in place between now and December 11th, the date at which the government will again run out of money barring additional Congressional action. There is still a very real possibility of a shutdown, although triggering events such as a vote on increasing the debt ceiling may come earlier than expected. Additionally, there is already action on trying to re-form a two year spending outline that would address sequestration caps and provide some degree of stability to an already unstable funding situation. Keep in mind that if no action is taken by early in the 2016 calendar year, sequestration may again become a factor for contractors and their government customers. Happy New Year!
