IT BUDGET FORECAST: WHO WILL HAVE MONEY IN FY’17?

Of the 25 largest federal civilian agencies, 19 are slated for an IT funding increase under the FY’17 budget proposal submitted by the President earlier this year.  After years of a flat or declining federal IT budgets, total federal IT spending is now near $90 billion. The President’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget calls for a 1.28% increase to $89.9 billion.  That includes approximately $51 billion for civilian agency spending and $38 billion for DOD IT.  All of this is according to a NextGov article based, itself, on projections from the Office of Management and Budget.  Cyber will continue to be the leading IT spending area, although modernization of outdated systems is expected to grab a larger proportion of the budget than in years past. While Congress can, of course, alter final specific appropriations, the budget request is usually an accurate barometer of the agencies that will have money and on where they will be spending it.  Make sure your company plans accordingly.
